Fairy Lake and Muskoka Development

The Huntsville Lakes, as they are known locally, include four connected lakes including Fairy Lake, Mary Lake, Lake Vernon, and Peninsula Lake. Combined they offer cottagers access to over 60 kms of boating.  Fairy Lake is the smallest of the four connected lakes in the Huntsville Lakes.  It has a surface area of 699 hectares and a water clarity of 3.1m. 

While the logging business initially dominated the area when it was first settled, seasonal cottages and resorts began to appear on the shores of Fairy Lake in the 1890s. Tourism equalled logging in economic importance to the area by the late 1890s. With the development of better roads in the 1940s and 1950s, Muskoka became an international tourist destination. With the improved access to Muskoka, including Fairy Lake, families from Southern Ontario increasingly sought cottage properties with the completion of Highway 11 in the early 1970s.

Boat Ramps on Fairy Lake

There are two public boat access points on Fairy Lake including a concrete ramp at Muskoka Heritage Place, and a natural ramp in The Locks on Muskoka River North beside Brunel Road. There is a private ramp at Huntsville Marine. Ramps located on the other lakes and waterways in the Huntsville chain of lakes also provide boat access to Fairy Lake including: Avery Beach in Hunters Bay, Kinsmen Beach on Lake Vernon, and a municipal ramp on Peninsula Lake beside Tally Ho.
